ANDY’S IS ON!!!

Last year there were no Green Gage Plums. This year a portion of them ripened early. Last season there were no Baby Crawford Peaches, this year we have a reasonable harvest. The best of the best is in and this year there is available product for shipping. That said, remember we are only dealing with about 8 acers of trees and not all the fruits are available for shipping. Before we tell you what will be available for shipping next week we would like to take a moment and name-drop. Remember the following name: Raspberry Nectarine. Small, like a Mirabelle, dark skin, burgundy red flesh and a flavor that is rich and complex like a wine, or a good Mangosteen. Only a handful of cases this year, but there is now a row of trees for next season. The Raspberry Nectarine is a hybrid developed by Andy himself. OK for next week we should have good supply of Baby Crawford Peaches (more flavorful than the original Crawford, the most intense freestone peach your will ever eat), Angelus Peach (travels well, low acid) , and the Mirabelle Plum ( ping-pong ball sized, green skin, gold flesh, often used for cooking or jams). Consider there anchor items. If you place an order, we will have many other peach, plum, nectarines varieties to add. For example Andy’s also has Laroda Plums and Flavor King Pluots. In most cases fruit will be picked to order and shipped the same day it is packed. This is a 6 to 8 week program and varieties come and go within a few days so we will provide daily updates for those who participate. There are 56 single layer flats on a pallet, and we can drop into the LA market, SFO market, or either airport (closer to SFO) daily. Why such a complicated deal for stone fruit? One taste and you will understand. It’s Andy’s!!!

POTATO NOTES FROM ALL OVER

Organic russet potatoes out of Colorado that are of worth are done. If you find ‘em, you’re gonna work ‘em. Pacific Northwest is on now and Colorado is expected to start again the last week of August. Purple A potatoes are not non-existent but they are scarce. Yellow fingerlings have shown some heat scarring but we are through that and product is shipping very clean until new harvest begin in mid-August. Purple fingerlings are available but red fingerlings are not. This means our fingerling mix only has three colors. Bulk (on the floor) potato loading begins next week out of New Mexico. They will run the yellows first, then reds, then russets by the first week of August.

NEW PRODUCE QUIZ – – WHO AM I???

We are native to India and may be over 10,000 years old. The Romans loved us. Then Americans declared us only fit for cows in the late 1600’s. But today, we join the Queen for tea between slices of buttered bread. Smooth or warty, we always have glossy skin and almost white flesh. Ranging from 3 inches to 2 feet in length, generally the English are the longest, while American’s are shorter and fatter. The Chinese hang weights on us sometimes to make us grow longer and stronger. Big or small, long and firm, with seeds or not – someone wrote a book listing why we are better than a man in 100 ways. We do hang out with real climbers, who may need some guidance, constraint or support, so we don’t end up rolling on the floor or taking over the party. Peel us if we’re waxed, scrub off any spines, and gut us if you burp. Eat raw, steam or sauté. Leave in vinegar, but not the freezer. We’re a must for Greek salads and gazpacho. Combined with yogurt, we counter Middle Eastern spices. Great with fish, dill, and tomato. A source of potassium, calcium, folate, and vitamin C, we’re fat free, cholesterol free and sodium free. We’re a diuretic, purifier, and relaxant. Use us as a cool astringent to soothe your skin. From fields and greenhouses, we come for you all year with a summer peak.

Answer To Last Week’s Quiz…CURRANT BERRIES…Congrats To All Winners
