GREEN GAGE GAME ON – PEAK WEEK AT ANDY’S

Two great things going on here, let’s go in order.  The Green Gage plums will be in full harvest next week at Andy’s Orchards in Morgan Hill, California. If you are a “guest” reader of Market Notes you can order single cases on line, and we strongly recommend it. Green Gage plums are packed in 5 pound boxes and are ping pong ball sized with a small seed. As such they hold well for shipping nationally. For industry customers other than FOB we offer consolidation in Watsonville, Santa Cruz, San Francisco or Los Angeles. Air freight out of SFO or LAX is available as well.  Second, aside from the best dessert plum on the planet, for the next few weeks this orchard will have the widest variety of peaches, plums, nectarines and pluots. The stone fruit flavors that we have come to know and love will be at its most varied display of the season this coming week. This includes the heirloom varieties, current crosses, and Andy’s Orchards exclusives. The apricots and cherries are done but everything else is full on. Please check in for a full list and maybe, just maybe we can talk about melons.

NEW POTATO PACKAGE – NEW POTATOES

As we finish up our summer harvest in Central California we introduce a new package for our fingerling potatoes. In response to the retail and “food box” demand we are now offering a new 3# poly bag for fingerlings. This bag can accommodate any of the 3 colors we offer as well as assortments. This bag is for conventional fingerlings.  We already have options for organic products.  The individual 3# poly bags are packed in a bail that holds 16/3# bags. We are able to put 50 cases of the 16/3# bags on a pallet. For the next few weeks we are offering samples to those interested. Then, when our crop finishes up, we will wait until our late September harvest to officially introduce the 3# bag to the industry.  Call it beta testing and we would love to get your thoughts on our new packaging. Don’t forget we also have our traditional 10/5# poly packs as well. Please contact your Culinary Rep for details and samples.

NEW PRODUCE QUIZ – – WHAT AM I??

In the poo of the sham, in the paste of the tooth,

I’ve slept with King Tut and helped increase youth.

My sweet can’t be beat, I’m sugar times fifty,

I allow retained water so thirst won’t become thee.

Low my delicate branch yields the head of Medusa,

With rootlets and taproots tangled to seduce ya.

My skin is dark brown, my flesh yellow gold,

I help reduce phlegm and remedy your cold.

I’m the master of healing, a medical wonder

But don’t use to much or the ground you’ll be under

Only rarely in candy, it’s most often a fake

I put head on your beer, and will flavor your cake.

With all of this wonder the one thing I don’t know

Is why my greatest use is in products tobacco?

THE ANSWER TO LAST WEEK’S QUIZ WAS …CARAWAY SEED.…CONGRATS TO ALL WINNERS
