A SEEDY SITUATION
Things in Yuma remain glum. While we promised all better come mid-February, and in a way that is true, we are robbing Peter to pay Paul. Straight from the source that many growers plated “winter” seed, expecting a cold winter. In fact, it has been quite warm and many of the leaves are not holding up to the unusually warmer temperatures. While this has reduced available product, field workers are now picking product on the younger side in order to avoid allocations, and for the most part it is working. Spinach, arugula, and kale are not currently being allocated, but when it comes to transition time there will be gaps unless the northern fields in Salinas can produce a month or so early. While most of the field rejections are on the organic side, conventional product was compromised as well. All in all, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Oddly enough, mesclun remains unaffected.
THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE RED THINGS
Apples and carrots and mini crystal roses. Potatoes and beets cut in many different poses. Endive and radish with watermelon too. These are all things that we can ship to you. Edible roses on baby red lettuce. Micro hearts on fire if you want you can get us. Fairy mix, firestix, ariels too. You’ll have so much red you won’t know what to do! We can shape it, we can make it, just for you in time. We can fly it, or overnight it, so all will arrive just fine. So call us or text us, or send us an email. We will arrange it and provide every detail. We’ll pack it and track it informed all the way. Another great Hallmark holiday! Next we’ll get kinky!
NEW PRODUCE QUIZ – WHO AM I ???
I sprouted thousands of years ago in Central and South America, a cherished crop of ancient civilizations who valued my strength and color. Over time I traveled the world, adapting easily and growing fast, often from tiny seeds scattered generously in warm soil. I thrive in sunshine, popping up quickly in gardens and fields, sometimes so eagerly that farmers joke I grow faster than gossip. Legends say I was once considered sacred, and even today I feel a bit dramatic with my bold personality. I stand tall with tender stems and flowing leaves, shaped like soft ovals that ripple in the breeze. My deep red to purple hues look like I dipped myself in sunset paint just to show off. When you taste me, I’m mildly earthy with a gentle spinach-like flavor and a hint of sweetness. I’m not shy in the kitchen and love being sautéed, steamed, or tossed into soups and stews. Some cooks stir-fry me with garlic and chilies, while others simmer me down until silky and comforting. I can be used fresh as greens or cooked until I melt into a richly colored dish. In many cultures I’m everyday food, not fancy, but always reliable and filling. I also bring drama to the plate. Beyond my looks, I’ve built a reputation as a hardworking leafy green. I supply plant protein along with fiber that keeps things moving smoothly. I’m rich in iron, calcium, and antioxidants that support strong bodies. So, if you’re eating something vibrant, nourishing, and quietly ancient, you might just be enjoying me.
