MIGHTY MILTON

After tremendous preparation and horrendous predictions Milton was not as strong as expected while still causing the loss of lives and massive destruction. Over three million without power, roads turned into rivers that can’t recede, and bouncing tornadoes cut off communities as an inspired search and rescue continues. It is interesting to note that these storms are moving further inland and tornadoes during these storms number over one hundred. Call it climate chance, melting ice-caps, global warming, whatever you like, there is no argument that the storm season is getting stronger, more destructive, and more threatening every year. The one hundred years storms there were the exception are rapidly becoming the standard. Due to exceptional preparation and evacuations the fatalities are, at this point, lower than they would have otherwise been, but that means little to those with losses. As far as our South Florida business is concerned, we have stepped aside. MIA and FLL and cancelled hundreds of both inbound and outbound flights and while we do not know of any major road damage or outages in this area, we hope all our friends are taking care of themselves and helping those in need. This is not the time to talk about business other than the business of support and concern.

SPECIALTY POTATOES…GAME ON

This week our fingerling potatoes in Colorado that have been going through the “sweats”, will complete their suberization and step not the light for cleaning, sorting and packing. There were no field problems this season and harvest went well (read: we got them out of the ground before any freeze or rain), post-harvest has been fine, so we expect a good crop that will hold until spring for thew conventional and late winter for organic. With Colorado on a full menu, we now have the broadest selection of the year. With products loading from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Arizona, and of course Colorado, we can quickly meet your specialty potato needs. Organic russets are part of that deal as well. Aside from our bi-coastal points of forward distribution, we have several FOB points and can often offer delivery to your dock. We have one setback to note. Other than purple fingerlings, there are few if any purple potatoes in stock this season, but other areas cover that well. It’s almost holiday time folks, bring it!

NEW PRODUCE QUIZ – WHO AM I ???

I am a native of Malaysia, although I flourish year round in Brazil, United States, Mexico and Israel.  I am not alone on my branch.  My fragrant, white and red petals always accompany me.  Although my diameter ranges from 1 to 2 inches and I am thin skinned, this is no indication of the pulpy punch my flavor packs.  My potent juice is added to cakes, soups, sauces, punches, fish, sorbet, and pies.  In Florida, one of my unique varieties has been known to open doors, but it might take a while.  But most often my glistening, bright, smooth skin garnishes summertime specialties.  I share many characteristics with a cousin fruit, and often we are used together.  I am an excellent source of Vitamin C as well as potassium, folic acid, and calcium.  I am also good for your daily bouts of scurvy, but not when squeezed into beer.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
